Details
Notice CP53E
CP53E means the IRS could not deposit the refund: the bank details were missing, invalid or rejected. Within 30 days you can add a bank account in your IRS online account. There is one attempt, and it cannot be done by phone. The status updates in about 2 to 5 business days. If you do nothing, a paper check goes out after 6 weeks.
Why
The IRS says paper checks are far more likely to be lost, stolen, altered or delayed than electronic payments, and direct deposit avoids checks returned as undeliverable.
